Jay Driver has a professional home.
Driver, a Wellesley native and Harvard right-hander, was selected by the Cleveland Guardians in the ninth round of the 2023 Major League Baseball amateur draft on Monday night.
The right-hander went 7-6 with a 4.41 ERA in 67.1 innings this past spring for the Crimson. Driver was a Boston Herald all-scholastic during his time at Wellesley.
Driver spent two seasons on the Cape as a player for Hyannis in the Cape Cod Baseball League to further cement his draft status.
Driver was not the only local selected Monday. Auburn native and current Bryant ace Coleman Picard was selected by the Kansas City Royals in the sixth round. Picard made noise when he fanned 12 over five innings against Virginia Tech on Feb. 24.
Massachusetts received some first-round fame on Sunday night as Westford Academy’s Matthew Shaw was selected by the Chicago Cubs with the No. 13 overall pick.
While Phillips Andover’s Thomas White went in the second round, Andover native and Wake Forest left-hander Sean Sullivan was taken with the 46th overall pick by the Colorado Rockies.
