The North End capped off another spectacular weekend feast with a colorful 10-hour procession of the Statue of St. Anthony through the streets Sunday.
St. Anthony’s Feast took place from Thursday to Sunday, bringing another round of the neighborhood’s best Italian food, — including everything from quahogs, pizza, zeppole, cannoli and gelato — vendors, singers, religious services, and more out in celebration.
The feast, begun in 1919 by Italian immigrants from the small town of Montefalcione in Avellino, featured the noted festive ten-hour procession of the Statue of Saint Anthony with a parade of residents, numerous marching bands and floats Sunday, organizers said. The statue arrived back at its home chapel Sunday night with a herald of confetti and streamers from the rooftops.
Earlier in the weekend, the feast kicked off with cooking demonstrations at Stella Cheese Culinary Pavilion, an open air mass in honor of the saint, and more.
The feast will be followed by the San Gennaro Feast in the North End from Friday, Aug. 30 to Sunday, Sept. 1.
