NextImg:Twin sisters from Prospect Hill both net 1,000th career point on special day

MEDFORD — On the court and off it, Prospect Hill Academy girls basketball seniors Breanna St. Germain and Jordan St. Germain feel their twin connection is even greater than the stereotype.

They showed it at a rare level Thursday night.

Just two minutes and 32 seconds apart, Breanna (18 points) and Jordan (14 points) each surpassed 1,000 career points with the Wizards in the first quarter, thriving despite playing less than 12 minutes of a 72-7 blowout win over Community Charter School of Cambridge.

“It’s very special in the sense that I get to have (this) with my best friend, my twin,” Jordan said. “She’s been with me everywhere my whole life.”

“I think it feels like another milestone if it’s together,” Breanna added. “For us to get it on the same night was a surprise. … It just shows that everything that we’ve been doing, worked. Really, if you do keep reaching toward a goal, it will happen. You’ve just got to work for it.”

Playing a weaker schedule has delayed the feat by limiting their playing time, but stretching it out allowed the twins the rare opportunity to reach it together and at home.

Neither wasted time with it so close in reach.

All of the team’s first 10 points were scored by the two, capped off by one of Breanna’s several steals that she turned into a fast-break layup to reach 1,000 points. She needed five entering the night, and the layup gave her six in the first 2:37 of play.

Both have always had a knack for finding each other on the court, and Breanna assisted Jordan’s next two shots to pull within one point of 1,000. Breanna again found her in the right corner, and Jordan split defenders on a drive to match Breanna’s 1,001 points only five minutes into the game.

It was just another example of how the two’s performances are boosted by their connection.

“When she doesn’t even think she’s open, I see that she’s open,” Breanna said. “I feel her presence. I feel like we can throw each other passes that nobody else can, really. … Right after I got my 1,000, it was like, now it’s her turn.”

“I know her game more than anybody else does,” Jordan added. “We’re always there to back each other up on the court, and the first to pick (each other) up off the court.”

Head coach Brian Harris subbed them out shortly after as the first quarter ended with a 30-1 lead – which is a frequent occurrence to make it all the more impressive that the two reached the mark.

There’s much Harris has to say about the twins – from their influence over their teammates, their connection with each other, their hard work, and their natural talents as both scorers and distributors.

What sticks out especially, though, is their drive and competitiveness.

“I will miss them greatly,” he said. “We’re trying to preach, ‘On the court, it’s a war.’ They buy into that. … They’ll play the game hard, and they’ll have a respect for the game. It’s tough. It’s a pleasure to have kids like that.”

For him, this was a long time coming since the two came in as freshman from Medford.

“I’ve been pumped up for this and I’ve been on edge for this for a while,” Harris said.

Every second the two played, father Richard St. Germain – who has coached them in the offseason – was filming from the sideline.

He also found it fitting they were able to reach 1,000 on the same night, and they’ve impressed him at every turn.

“It’s just very indicative of how they’ve grown up, they’ve always been hand in hand, by each other’s side,” he said. “Their relationship and how close they are – this is definitely something that was destined to be played out just the way it has. I’m proud of them.”

Neither’s college plans are set, though Jordan looks to study nursing and Breanna is thinking of studying criminal justice. Both want to play at the next level, too, for the right fit. And they’re not ruling out playing together more, either.
