NextImg:Trump should step aside, Asa Hutchinson says, announcing run

It may come as no surprise to anyone following his activities since leaving office that former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson said Sunday he will join the race for the Republican presidential nomination.

“As I’ve traveled the country for six months, I hear people talk about the leadership of our country, and I’m convinced that people want leaders that appeal to the best of America, and not simply appeal to our worst instincts,” the two term Republican governor said on ABC’s This Week.

Hutchinson, a former U.S. prosecutor, congressman and head of the Drug Enforcement Agency, is a noted and outspoken critic of the current Republican front runner, former President Donald Trump.

Trump, on Tuesday, is expected to turn himself over to authorities in New York for arrest and processing following his indictment over an alleged hush money payment made during the run-up to the 2016 presidential election.

In joining the race, Hutchinson also called for Trump to step aside to avoid the spectacle which will inevitably follow his personal entanglements.

“For the sake of the office of the presidency, I do think that’s too much of a sideshow and distraction, and he needs to be able to concentrate on his due process,” he said.

MassGOP Chairwoman Amy Carnevale said during a Sunday appearance on WCVB that she thinks Hutchinson’s addition to the conservative field, which also includes former U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley, only serves to make a stronger final candidate.

“As a leader of the Republican party, I think having that dialogue between candidates is a healthy thing. It’s healthy for our democracy. I do think it’s valuable to have a range of views and, you know, the party will sort itself out. Ultimately the nominee who emerges will be, I think, the right thing for the party,” she said.

Hutchinson has spent his time since leaving office campaigning without a race to run.

America Strong and Free PAC, a spending committee run by the former governor, has recently been laying out tens of thousands of dollars to air ads attacking Democratic leadership, sometimes featuring Hutchinson directly and sometimes not.

Hutchinson was in New Hampshire, home of the first primaries, as early as April of last year for an appearance at Saint Anselm College’s Politics and Eggs event, where presidential hopefuls tend to test the waters.
