Labor unrest at a major supermarket’s South Coast distribution center could be coming to an end.

Teamsters Local 25 over the weekend reported a tentative six-year agreement covering more than 900 workers at a Stop & Shop distribution center in Freetown.  The union said the agreement guarantees that the facility will remain open, strengthen benefits and raises wages.

“We held Stop & Shop accountable and secured one of the strongest contracts in the supermarket industry,” said Local 25 President Tom Mari. “This victory shows what happens when workers refuse to back down.”

The local union said that it had the backing of 30,000-member United Food and Commercial Workers Union, Gov. Maura Healey and other elected officials.

According to the Teamsters, new hires will receive an 80% wage increase over the length of the agreement, while veteran workers will see an over 30% raise. The agreement also preserves “top-tier” health care and increases pension contributions.

Microsoft is closing down Skype, the video-calling service it bought for $8.5 billion in 2011, which had helped spark a transformation in how people communicate online.

The tech giant said it will retire Skype in May and shift some of its services to Microsoft Teams, its flagship videoconferencing and team applications platform. Skype users will be able to use their existing accounts to log into Teams.

Founded in 2003 by a group of engineers in Tallinn, Estonia, Skype was a pioneer in making telephone calls using the internet instead of landlines. It relied on VOIP, voice over internet protocol, technology that converts audio into a digital signal transmitted online. Skype added video calls after online retailer eBay bought the service in 2005.
