It’s been a while since there was this much room to roam in Copley Square. When this Jan. 11, 1963 photo was taken, buildings in the Copley Square area were being torn down for the Massachusetts Expressway extension, and the Prudential Building was on the rise. Workers are at the 48th St. floor of the 52-story building. At 749 feet, Prudential was the tallest building in Boston, until it was surpassed by the John Hancock Tower in 1976 (now 200 Clarendon).
