BOSTON – A three-goal onslaught in the second half powered the Boston Latin Academy Dragons to a 3-2 victory over O’Bryant to claim the Boston City League girls soccer title for the third year in a row.

O’Bryant had a late charge, scoring two goals in the final minutes, but Latin Academy (7-7-2) held on.

Head coach Phi Nguyen said the team’s effort to improve every week paid off.

“It’s a work in progress every day,” Nguyen said. “We always come in and know that hard work will pay off on the soccer field.”

The scoreless first half featured some high-quality chances for both sides. O’Bryant goalkeeper Rylee Hamblin stopped several blistering shots.

Latin Academy came out with a purpose in the second half, and a corner kick set up a prime opportunity. Junior Jackson Andrew darted to the far post and fired the ball into the net to give the Dragons the lead.

“It went through everyone else and I was just there to kick it in,” Andrew said. “I couldn’t stop smiling after, it felt great.”

The Tigers responded with a quick advanced downfield and fired off two shots from close range. That’s when Madelyn Andrade stepped up, blocking both shots and then clearing the ball.

After several minutes of transitional play at midfield, the Dragons again entered O’Bryant territory and Molly Carey sent a pass to Wren Montgomery, who quickly fired the insurance marker into the back of the net.

Nguyen said the Dragons used some halftime adjustments to create the opportunities.

“We play a high possession-based game,” Nguyen said. “We move the ball from side-to-side and look to exploit their defensive shape.”

Several moments later, Hazel O’Rourke fired in another insurance goal from deep to further solidify the lead. This came after her initial shot attempt ricocheted off the defender right back to her, and her second chance found the twine.

“I wasn’t expecting it to hit her,” O’Rourke said. “I thought it may have hit her hand but I guess it hit her head and I was able to shoot again.”

O’Bryant finally broke through via an Aydanne Grant finish. Grant, named game MVP, fired a second goal in the waning minutes but it was too late for the Tigers to earn the comeback.

“It feels so great,” Andrew said. “I was definitely nervous at the end but we pulled through.”
