NextImg:The brilliant Northern Lights seen across Massachusetts: ‘Aurora alert!’

Quick, look up!

People across the Bay State were rushing outside Thursday night to check out to the brilliant Northern Lights.

Residents were seeing pink and purple skies from the Aurora Borealis.

“Aurora alert! Ongoing right now,” 1DegreeOutside posted on social media, which is run by meteorologist couple Matt and Danielle Noyes.

They had a beautiful view of the Northern Lights from their house in the Merrimack Valley.

The National Weather Service’s Boston office earlier on Thursday said the Northern Lights might be visible across the area, citing the NOAA NWS Space Weather Prediction Center.

“One of our Meteorologists snapped this picture of the Northern Lights here at the NWS office in Norton, MA!” NWS Boston posted. “It looks like it will be tougher viewing in northern MA with some cloud cover around, but clouds should dissipate over the next couple of hours.”

There were many sightings in the Boston-area despite the heavy light pollution.

“… a sure sign of the brilliance of this rare event!” 1DegreeOutside posted.

A fast coronal mass ejection erupted from the Sun on Tuesday, and was expected to arrive at Earth on Thursday — leading to these brilliant colors in the sky.

“When they arrive at Earth, a geomagnetic storm can result,” the NOAA NWS Space Weather Prediction Center wrote. “Watches at this level are very rare.”

The aurora could be visible as far south as Alabama.
