NextImg:Suspect in custody after 9-hour standoff with police

A man was taken into custody in the early hours Sunday after a nearly nine-hour standoff with police in a barricaded Charlestown apartment, according to the Boston police.

“All residents within the vicinity are very scared, very uncomfortable, very worried and feel unsafe,” a resident of the same floor of Mezzo Design Lofts at 30 Caldwell St. in Charlestown told the Herald during the standoff Saturday night.

The woman, a four-year resident of the building, asked to remain anonymous.

Boston police were called to the scene around 4:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon based on reports of an emotional disturbed person in the building, according to department spokesperson Officer Michael Torigian.

Upon arrival, witnesses informed officers the individual was armed with some sort of firearm or shotgun. At 4:46 p.m., police declared a “Code 99,” which can mean a number of situations, including a barricaded suspect.

The neighbor said the building, a four-story apartment with around 40 units a floor, was surrounded by officers, ambulances and a SWAT team before she left the area to stay with friends Saturday night.

Boston police and SWAT negotiators negotiated with the individual for many hours, said Torigian. At around 1 a.m., SWAT officers took him into custody and sent him to a local hospital for an evaluation.

The suspect was not identified by police Sunday.

There were no reported injuries to the man, responders or neighbors, Torigian said.

Many of the neighbors, the neighbor said, were “holed up in the community room” and exasperated, saying “Oh is he at it again? … What escalated it this time?”

The police have been called several times for the individual, the neighbor said, including twice on Monday and once on Wednesday. Other residents told her the problem has been going on since January, she added.

“It seems like someone who is mentally unwell, but they have been making violent remarks,” she said, noting the person has yelled things like “I will kill, kill, kill; I will kill in self defense” and has thrown things like soup cans from his balcony window.

While she said she knows who the man is, she does not know his name and has never had a conversation with him.

“We’ve heard him say all these things. How is that not enough?” she said, frustrated that the situation had escalated this far. “Couldn’t he have received the help he needs in another manner? Couldn’t he have been helped on Monday?”

As of Sunday afternoon, the apartment is frozen while detectives apply for a search warrant, Torigian reported.

The department has not released any information regarding an arrest or charges.
