Staties and firefighters responded to a false report of a person falling through the ice on the Charles River on Wednesday, according to officials who issued an ice safety warning.

Mass State Police troopers from the Boston Barracks on Wednesday morning responded to the report of a person falling through the ice near the Longfellow Bridge. The pair on the ice were reportedly skating.

Troopers confirmed the safety of the skaters, and then asked them to keep off the ice and stay on land.

“Update on the Ice Rescue response to the Charles River at the Longfellow Bridge, skaters are off the ice on the Boston side,” Cambridge Fire posted on social media. “CFD companies are clearing from the incident. @MassStatePolice troopers have identified & cautioned the persons involved. ‘Skaters’ have left the area.”

The incident caused a multi-agency fire and police response. It also sparked an ice safety advisory from State Police.

“At this time, we’re not confident that the Charles River or any body of water in the Commonwealth has adequately frozen to safely allow for activities like walking, skating, or fishing,” State Police said in a statement.

“Before venturing out on the ice, we ask members of the public to use good judgement in the same way swimmers should approach water in the summer,” MSP added.

As in any emergency, MSP urged residents to call 911 if they see anyone in danger.

“STAY OFF THE ICE!” Cambridge Fire posted. “Let’s keep our cities safe!”
