The Patriots are expected to sign free-agent linebacker Carson Wells, sources told the Boston Herald.
Wells worked out for the Patriots in June. The team does not currently have an opening on their roster, so they’ll need to make a corresponding move.
Wells most recently played for the XFL’s St. Louis BattleHawks. After going undrafted out of Colorado in 2022, Wells signed with the Cincinnati Bengals as a rookie free agent but was cut last August. He played 10 games for the BattleHawks in 2023, totaling 45 tackles and 3.5 tackles for loss.
The 6-foot-3, 241-pound defender joins Ja’Whaun Bentley, Chris Board, Diego Fagot, Joe Giles-Harris, Anfernee Jennings, Matthew Judon, Marte Mapu, Calvin Munson, Ronnie Perkins, Jahlani Tavai, Josh Uche and Mack Wilson on the Patriots’ linebacker depth chart. The team recently released linebackers Olakunle Fatukasi and Jourdan Heilig.
Wells was not present for Monday’s Patriots practice.
The Patriots recently signed to other players from developmental leagues in running back C.J. Marable and offensive lineman Micah Vanterpool, both of whom were with the USFL.
