The Patriots filled a spot on their practice squad Wednesday by signing wide receiver Mathew Sexton.

Sexton, who was released from the Falcons’ practice squad in September, adds depth after rookie wide receiver Demario Douglas suffered his second head injury of the season in Sunday’s loss to the Giants. Sexton was among a group of kickers, punters and wide receivers who worked out for the Patriots on Tuesday.

Sexton went undrafted out of Eastern Michigan in 2021. The 5-foot-11, 175-pound receiver came into the league with the Steelers and doesn’t have any regular-season NFL experience but caught seven passes on 11 targets for 70 yards and returned three kicks for 63 yards and six punts for 92 yards during the 2021 and 2023 preseasons. He also caught 23 passes for 364 yards and returned kicks and punts with the XFL’s Vegas Vipers this year.

Sexton joins fellow wide receivers Malik Cunningham and T.J. Luther on the practice squad. The team has Douglas, rookie Kayshon Boutte, DeVante Parker, Jalen Reagor, JuJu Smith-Schuster and Tyquan Thornton on their 53-man roster.

Sexton ran a 4.44-second 40-yard dash at his pro day in 2021. He was a teammate of Patriots rookies guard Sidy Sow and kicker Chad Ryland at Eastern Michigan, where he caught 100 passes for 1,335 yards with nine touchdowns and carried the ball six times for 23 yards in four seasons. Additionally, he made 18 tackles on special teams and returned 21 kicks for 353 yards and two punts for 77 yards with a touchdown.
