The Red Sox have promoted former first-round pick Mikey Romero to Double-A Portland, a club source confirmed on Monday.
The news was first reported by Chase Ford of Milb Central.
Romero was Boston’s top pick in the 2022 MLB Draft, going No. 24 overall out of Orange Lutheran High School in California. The shortstop has battled significant injury woes through his first two professional seasons but has finally begun rounding into form over the past two months.
The 20-year-old also had a stretch recently where he was perhaps the hottest hitter in the minor leagues.
In 13 games between July 20 and Aug. 6 Romero batted .446 with eight home runs, six doubles, 21 RBI and a 1.474 OPS. He was honored as South Atlantic League Player of the Week and Player of the Month over that stretch, though his heater came to an abrupt end when he suffered a concussion after being hit in the head by a ground ball that took a bad hop. Romero missed about a week but was activated on Aug. 14 and has seen regular playing time ever since.
Overall Romero has hit .278 with 10 home runs, 41 RBI, 21 doubles and an .826 OPS in 62 games this season, the vast majority of those coming at High-A Greenville. Romero made his season debut on May 7 after slowly ramping up following a back injury that derailed his 2023 season, and he now he’s set to take a major step forward as he moves up to Double-A.
