The Patriots and free-agent running back James Robinson have agreed to a 2-year deal worth up to $8 million, according to a source.

Robinson projects as a rotational back in New England, where Rhamondre Stevenson emerged as a capable No. 1 rusher last season. His arrival likely indicates the Patriots are parting ways with Damien Harris, an unrestricted free agent. In addition to Stevenson and Robinson, the Pats have Ty Montgomery and 2022 draft picks Pierre Strong Jr. and Kevin Harris in their backfield.

Splitting time between the Jets and Jaguars last year, Robinson averaged 3.9 yards per carry. He rushed for 425 yards and three touchdowns, all scored with the Jaguars, who traded him midseason. The 24-year-old broke out for a 1,000-yard season as a rookie in 2020 and scored seven touchdowns and averaged 4.7 yards the next season as Jacksonville’s starter.

As a restricted free agent, the 5-foot-9, 219-pounder was not tendered by the Jets this offseason. Robinson entered the league as an undrafted free agent out of Illinois State who ran a 4.64-second time in the 40-yard dash. He is considered a power back with plus receiving skills. He caught a career-high 49 passes as a rookie for 344 yards and three touchdowns, but was limited to nine catches last year.

Robinson became the Patriots’ fourth outside free-agent addition, following wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster and offensive tackles Riley Reiff and Calvin Anderson. The team has also re-signed seven players and tendered two other restricted free agents in Myles Bryant and Yodny Cajuste.
