The Patriots are signing ex-Jets offensive lineman Wes Schweitzer to a free-agent contract, per source.

Schweitzer is an eight-year veteran coming off two seasons with the Jets and previous stops in Washington and Atlanta. The 31-year-old projects as a depth signing at guard and center, having played only 150 offensive snaps the past two seasons combined. Schweitzer was last a full-time starter in 2020, when he started 13 of 16 games for the Commanders.

He originally entered the league as a sixth-round pick out of San Jose State in the 2016 draft. Schweitzer logged 36 starts for the Falcons over his first three NFL seasons before leaving for Washington, where his play began to tail off. In New York, he appeared in 10 total games and made two starts, while missing time with a hand injury last year. He also crossed paths with new Patriots receivers coach and ex-Jets offensive assistant Todd Downing.

Over his career, Schweitzer has usually graded out as a better pass-protector than run-blocker. His last standout season came in 2021, per Pro Football Focus.

His addition follows the Patriots’ release of longtime captain and center David Andrews on Thursday. Schweitzer joins Mike Onwenu, Cole Strange, Layden Robinson, Sidy Sow, Ben Brown, Jake Andrews, Tyrese Robinson and Lecitus Smith on the team’s interior line.
