The Patriots signed free-agent defensive lineman Trey Flowers to one of their two open roster spots Tuesday, a source told the Herald.

Flowers, 29, rejoins the team after originally entering the league as a Patriots fourth-round draft pick in 2015. Flowers spent four seasons with the team, winning two Super Bowls and recording 21 sacks over 37 starters. He left New England to sign a massive free-agent contract with the Lions in 2019, but washed out after just three years in Detroit.

Last season, Flowers played four games with the Dolphins and made four tackles in a reserve role. The 6-foot-2, 265-pounder has battled several injuries over his career, but offers the versatility to play across the defensive line. He worked out for the Patriots on Monday.

Flowers’ best performances have often come in the playoffs. He posted 2.5 sacks during the Pats’ historic comeback victory over the Falcons in Super Bowl LI. Later, he posted two sacks and six QB hits over the Patriots’ next Super Bowl run in 2018, during which he played every snap of their upset AFC Championship Game win at Kansas City.

He now joins Davon Godchaux, Deatrich Wise, Lawrence Guy, Christian Barmore, rookie Keion White, Daniel Ekuale, Sam Roberts, Carl Davis and DaMarcus Mitchell in the team’s defensive line room.

The NFL Network first reported Flowers’ signing.
