The Patriots are re-signing quarterback Will Grier to their practice squad, a source told the Herald.

Grier was cut from the active roster Saturday to clear an open spot for offensive tackle Conor McDermott, who started the team’s loss last weekend to the Giants. Grier, 28, served as the Patriots’ third-string quarterback from mid-September until his release. He did not see any game action.

Grier’s return follows Mac Jones’ fourth benching this season in New York, and a poor second-half performance from backup Bailey Zappe. The three of them split top reps in practice two weeks ago, the only time Grier has worked with the starters sign he first joined the team. Last week, Grier told reporters it was “great,” and he believed he could help the team win.

“I came in at a tough time as far as reps go, so it was good to get some,” Grier said. “Even the scout-team reps I get when we do scout team are good. Just good to play ball. You’ve seen guys around the league like (Vikings quarterback) Josh Dobbs. It’s awesome to see what he did, man. At the end of the day, you’ve just got to play ball.

“And (Dobbs)’ obviously a testament to that theory that I believe in wholeheartedly. If I get the opportunity, I’m just going to go play and win.”

Grier had previous stops with the Panthers, who drafted him in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft, the Cowboys and Bengals.
