Patriots defensive assistant V’Angelo Bentley is leaving the organization to join a new coaching staff at Duke, according to a league source.
Bentley will become Duke’s new cornerbacks coach, according to 247Sports. The 30-year-old worked with Patriots defensive backs the past two seasons after getting hired through the Bill Walsh Diversity Coaching Fellowship. Bentley started his coaching career as an assistant at Penn State from 2019-2021.
He becomes the second coach to leave Bill Belichick’s staff in the last month, as speculation swirls over Belichick’s future in New England. The team lost wide receivers coach Ross Douglas in December, when Douglas was hired as the new passing game coordinator/receivers coach at Syracuse. Multiple assistant coaches, including those in contract years, are currently waiting on Belichick as they face their own uncertain futures.
According to Sports Illustrated, Belichick gave most assistants two weeks off. Earlier this week, Belichick reportedly met with team owner Robert Kraft to discuss the direction and state of the franchise. The Patriots are coming off their worst season of Kraft’s ownership and Belichick’s tenure at 4-13.
An ex-college player, Bentley originally joined the Patriots as an undrafted rookie free agent out of Illinois in 2016. He was cut at the end of training camp.
