The New England Patriots hosted free-agent running back Darrell Henderson on a tryout basis, a league source told the Boston Herald on Wednesday.

The Patriots also hosted free-agent running back Leonard Fournette for a workout Wednesday, sources told the Herald.

Henderson, 25, spent last season with the Los Angeles Rams and Jacksonville Jaguars, picking up 283 yards and three touchdowns on 70 carries with 17 catches for 102 yards. Henderson, who’s 5-foot-8, 208 pounds, was selected in the third round of the 2019 NFL Draft by the Rams out of Memphis. The Super Bowl LVI champion has 396 career carries for 1,742 yards with 13 touchdowns and 66 career catches for 474 yards with four touchdowns. He’s started 28 of 50 career games.

A league source told the Herald earlier this week that the Patriots were “kicking the tires” on running back depth. It’s a position of need after New England cut running back James Robinson during the offseason workout program.

The Patriots currently have starting running back Rhamondre Stevenson backed up by 2022 draft picks Pierre Strong and Kevin Harris, Ty Montgomery and J.J. Taylor. They could use more insurance in case Stevenson goes down with an injury. Veteran running back Damien Harris left the Patriots for the Buffalo Bills in free agency this offseason.

Stevenson carried the ball 210 times for 1,040 yards with five touchdowns and caught 69 passes for 421 yards with one additional score in a bell-cow role last season. Montgomery is expected to serve in a pass-catching role based on his usage during the spring. Currently, Strong, Harris and Taylor would be vying for valuable backup spots at the position.

Henderson has experience as an early-down rusher and pass-catching back. He was waived by the Rams on Nov. 22 and claimed by the Jaguars. He’s been out of the NFL since being waived by Jacksonville on Dec. 9. Dalvin Cook, Ezekiel Elliott and Kareem Hunt are the highest-profile free-agent running backs still available.
