Problems continue to mount at the beleaguered school in Somerville that officials have ordered closed for the entirety of next academic year.
The pre-kindergarten-grade 8 Winter Hill Community Innovation School has shut down entirely after a consultant discovered “the unexpected presence of asbestos in material not typically found to contain asbestos,” district officials announced.
“The City closed the building, and it will remain closed to all until further notice as we work to investigate the findings and remediate the material. We will continue to keep our staff, families, and community updated,” Superintendent Ruben Carmona and Mayor Katjana Ballantyne wrote in a letter to families and staffers.
Carmona and Ballantyne did not disclose what material had contained the asbestos. The city did not immediately provide the Herald a copy of the memo from the consultant.
This comes less than a handful of days after officials shuttered summer programming early at the Edgerly Education Center, an administrative building being transformed into classrooms for the majority of Winter Hill’s students.
Asbestos removed in window caulking, which officials described as a type that does not affect one’s health because it doesn’t release fibers easily, at the Edgerly prompted concerns from parents and staffers, and the subsequent closure of summer learning there.
Officials said they met with staff and families late last week to “assure them that the (Edgerly) was and remains safe to occupy.” The first day of the 2023-24 school year is scheduled for Aug. 30.
Winter Hill, prone to faulty infrastructure throughout the years, closed in June after concrete crumbled from the ceiling and fell onto a staircase inside the 95,000-square-foot building, constructed in 1975.
Winter Hill teachers and staffers packed up their classrooms and offices in late July, and materials and furniture will be relocated to the Edgerly sometime this month, according to a letter from officials dated July 21.
Throughout the summer, outside structural engineers hired to review Winter Hill have continued to assess the feasibility of potential short-term repairs or full renovation, or the necessity for a new building, according to officials.
A community information meeting is scheduled for Thursday at 5:30 p.m., when officials will share further plans for the upcoming school year and to field questions from parents.
