A man accused of nearly killing a woman by shooting her in the head during what prosecutors say was an attempted robbery in Malden was charged with the crime as he lay in a hospital bed and avoided being photographed.

Mohamed Abdulaziz, 35, of Somerville, is charged with armed assault with intent to murder, assault with a dangerous weapon, carrying a firearm without a license and possession of ammunition. He appeared before a Malden District Court judge Tuesday afternoon via the Zoom internet teleconferencing program from his hospital bed, though only his lawyer, Tim Flaherty, could be seen in the video feed.

“He’s present, he’s participating, he’s suffering from multiple injuries,” Flaherty said after requesting that Abdulaziz’s “image or his likeness not be distributed at this time,” citing concerns that his client may have been misidentified or that seeing him would unfairly prejudice any future jury trial.

Middlesex Assistant District Attorney Carrie Spiros, the prosecutor for the case, had no objection to the identity motion at this time — though she did stress that the commonwealth be able to do its normal fingerprinting and other booking routines as soon as the defendant is released from the hospital.

The charges, and Abdulaziz’s injuries, stem from a violent event Spiros said occurred Sunday night in the lobby of 10 Overlook Ridge, which matches the listed address for an apartment complex in Malden named Quarrystone at Overlook Ridge.

Police responded to the location after receiving a stream of 911 calls a little after 2:20 a.m. reporting multiple shots fired and that a woman had been shot, Spiros said, reading from a copy of the probable cause document that was ordered partially impounded during the hearing.

Surveillance footage from around 2:17 a.m. shows a group in the lobby who Spiros said was “sort of gathering there with the intention of going to an apartment” to continue the party they had started earlier that night at area bars.

Two men entered after the group with guns and started firing in what Spiros said was a botched robbery attempt. As eight or 10 bullets flew between the gunmen and another man toward the back of the lobby who Spiros said was defending himself, a woman was shot in the head.

“The woman who was shot does not appear to be the intended target,” Spiros said.

But nevertheless, a bullet entered the woman’s head just under her right ear that caused “considerable damage” and sent her to a series of hospitals before she arrived at Massachusetts General where she remained at the time of the hearing with no brain activity and “likelihood for survival, slim.”

As the gunmen made their escape from the lobby, Spiros said, Abdulaziz — bleeding out from his own gunshot wounds — threw his hand against the glass door, leaving a bloody print that forensic techs were able to lift a palm print from, which led to his arrest.

The case is scheduled to resume for a dangerousness hearing at 2 p.m. Wednesday.

This is a developing story.
