More than $100,000 has already been raised for the Sidney Mae Olson Rainbow Fund, which is looking to create ways for children from underrepresented communities to access education that otherwise couldn’t afford it.

“We do feel so fortunate for the community support. We’ve got a lot of good things going on,” Sidney’s father Eric Olson told the Herald. He and his family are carrying on the legacy of his 5-year-old daughter through the scholarship fund they created after her tragic death in May.

Specifically, the family is working on the scholarship with the SHED Children’s Campus, an Andover-based education center where Sidney had been attending kindergarten.

After the unfathomable happened – Sidney was struck and killed at an intersection on her way to art class in May – the Olson family has turned the tragedy into positive community initiatives.

To go along with continued road safety advocacy, the family has partnered with the Feaster Five, a 5-mile road race that has a turn out of 10,000 runners every Thanksgiving. They are  looking to raise money in advance of the run that promotes road safety work and other efforts to provide access to kids to various sports and educational programs, Eric Olson said.

His wife, Mary-Beth Ellis, a former world champion triathlete and 12-time Ironman champion, has started a multi-week running program, with 15 children participating.

“It builds resilience. It builds confidence,” Olson said of the running initiative. “We are hopeful that we can extend to some communities that don’t have access to programs like that.”

Though Sidney has been gone over three months, her father said he believes his daughter is still offering much to the world.

“Sid was such a creative, curious kid that we want her spirit to live on,” he said. “The best way to do that is to have it live on in others. Our mission is to tap into the potential of kids and that comes from creating safe communities, but also providing access to education and sports programs that help them.
