NextImg:Shooting during Chicago White Sox game leaves 2 women wounded

Two women were wounded during a shooting at a White Sox baseball game in Chicago Friday night.

The violence unfolded just before 9 p.m. at Guaranteed Rate Field on Friday during a game between the White Sox and the Oakland Athletics, according to authorities.

A 42-year-old woman sustained a gunshot wound to the leg, and a 26-year-old woman suffered a graze wound to her abdomen. The older of the two was hospitalized at University of Chicago Medical Center in fair condition while the latter refused medical attention, according to the police statement.

Both women were seated midway up Section 161 in left-center field, police said, according to NBC Chicago.

“Upon receiving notification of this incident, CPD responded immediately and deployed additional resources while coordinating with White Sox security to maintain the safety of those who were in attendance or working at the game,” the police said in its statement. “At no time was it believed there was an active threat.”

Nearly 22,000 people showed up to watch the game, which ended in a 12-4 loss for the White Sox. A ‘90s-esque postgame concert featuring Vanilla Ice, Rob Base and Tone Loc scheduled for after the game was also canceled due to “technical issues,” according to the team.

The shooting is currently under investigation. Major League Baseball did not provide any details but confirmed it was in contact with the team and Chicago police.

“While the police continue to investigate, White Sox security confirms that this incident did not involve an altercation of any kind,” the team said in its statement.

“The White Sox are thinking of the victims at this time and wishing them a speedy recovery.”
