Seekonk’s brightest star delivered the program its first state title.
Sophomore Tyler Kropis fired a complete game shutout striking out 12 as No. 3 Seekonk captured its first state championship in program history with a 5-0 win over No. 12 Abington on Sunday afternoon at Polar Park in Worcester.
Seekonk’s state championship victory comes a year after they lost in the final game to Manchester-Essex.
“This stung last year,” Seekonk coach Joe DeMelo said. “We knew we had a team to come back. When we were on the bus on the way home all of our guys were screaming, ‘we’re going to be back next year!’ They were right.”
Kropis was locked in from the opening pitch showcasing pinpoint command of his fastball, curveball, and slider. At one point the South Coast Conference’s most valuable player had a stretch where he struck out seven consecutive Green Wave hitters. He did not let up a hit until a leadoff double to start the fifth.
“I was hyped up and ready to go right from when I woke up,” Kropis said. “I wanted to work so hard after last year to get back to this point. I just love this moment. I felt great from the opening gates.”
Seekonk (21-4) scored all the runs it needed in the bottom of the first. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases and Kevin Crowe lined an RBI hit to left to put the Warriors up 1-0. The two sides settled down until the bottom of the fourth when the Warriors gained separation. With two runners in scoring position, Declan Lush roped a two run single to center to stretch the lead to 3-0. Later in the frame, Jaden Arruda made his presence felt as he connected on a two RBI double to left center to give Seekonk a comfortable 5-0 advantage.
Kropis, meanwhile, stayed on cruise control, striking out a pair in the seventh including the final hitter of the game to send the Warriors into a frenzy.
