Next week Major League Baseball will hold its second-annual Spring Breakout prospect showcase, putting a spotlight on the game’s most promising up-and-coming stars.
Thursday morning the league unveiled each club’s roster, and as expected the Red Sox’s team will be stacked.
Top prospects Roman Anthony, Kristian Campbell and Marcelo Mayer will headline the Red Sox Spring Breakout team, which will face off against the Tampa Bay Rays’ prospects on March 13 in Port Charlotte. Anthony, Campbell and Mayer all rank within the No. 15 of MLB Pipeline’s Top 100 Prospect rankings, as does Franklin Arias, the 19-year-old shortstop who currently ranks No. 75.
In addition to those four, other position players of note include outfielders Jhostynxon Garcia and Miguel Bleis, and infielders Yoeilin Cespedes and Mikey Romero. Garcia was recently added to Boston’s 40-man roster and led all Red Sox minor leaguers in home runs last season, Bleis and Cespedes were both top recent international signings, and Romero was Boston’s first-round pick in 2022.
For the pitchers, David Sandlin and Hunter Dobbins will headline with the Red Sox staff. Sandlin is Boston’s top ranked healthy pitching prospect (No. 9 in MLB Pipeline’s Red Sox top 30) and hit 101 mph during an offseason bullpen session this winter, and Dobbins was added to the 40-man roster and is a contender to earn a spot on the big league roster this spring.
Payton Tolle, Boston’s second-round pick last summer, is also on the roster, as is Connelly Early and top recent international signings Juan Valera, Jedixson Paez and Yordanny Monegro.
