PHOENIX — Speaking Monday at the NFL owners meetings, Robert Kraft broke a whopper of a story that his rapper friend Meek Mill texted him last week.

“(Mill) said Lamar Jackson wants to become a Patriot,” Kraft told a small group of reporters.

Kraft’s response?

“I said that’s Bill Belichick’s decision,” Kraft said, deferring to the Patriots’ head coach.

Jackson, whom the Ravens gave a non-exclusive, $32.4 million franchise tag last month, tweeted Monday that he’s requested a trade. Any team is free to sign Jackson to an offer sheet, but it would have to surrender two first-round picks to Baltimore if the Ravens opt not to match. Jackson is technically a free agent and would represent a major upgrade for the Patriots, if they showed interest and landed him.

But during an earlier session with the media, Kraft endorsed his current quarterback, Mac Jones.

“I’m a big fan of Mac,” said Kraft. “He did a very fine job (his rookie season). We made the playoffs. I think we experimented with some things last year that frankly didn’t work when it came to him, in my opinion.

“I think we made changes that I think put him in a good position to excel.”

Bill Belichick, meanwhile, once again refused to say Jones was his starter when asked if Jones would be in a competition with backup Bailey Zappe during training camp.

“Well, everybody will get a chance to play,” Belichick told reporters. “We’ll play the best player.”
