NextImg:Rita Moreno has fun being bad in ‘The Prank’

At 92 there’s no slowing down, much less stopping the legendary Rita Moreno.

A standout at last Sunday’s Oscar telecast, she stars as one twisted teacher in the weekend’s horrific thriller “The Prank.”

“I was sent the script and read it and I thought, ‘Oh my goodness! This could be so much fun,’ never having played that kind of part.

“I play a snake! This teacher in high school — I’ve never seen anybody so evil as this character, Mrs. Wheeler. She also wears —  I mean if you can believe it — black leather gloves.”

Why the gloves!?

“I’m not telling,” Moreno said coyly in a Zoom interview earlier this week.

“I saw a screening about two months ago and I laughed so hard at myself. I thought, ‘Damn, I’m funny.’”

Mrs. Wheeler is easily the most feared and hated physics high school teacher anyone could imagine.  When she discovers a cheater in her class, she announces the entire class will fail unless the culprit confesses.

So two students decide to get even as a prank. They spread the rumor on social media that Wheeler is a murderer.  Conveniently, there’s a missing student and the prank escalates when the lie is spread that she’s killed the kid.

Police arrive, Mrs. Wheeler is questioned, the whole thing is getting out of hand.  Until it gets worse, much worse.

Is this a thriller?  A horror entry?

“It’s a cult movie. I don’t care what anybody says, that’s what I call it,” Moreno answered. “I don’t know if it’s a thriller. It may be but the protagonist is so over the top evil, that’s the fun.

“Every once in a while during filming I’d say to Maureen Bharoocha, the director, I’d say, ‘What do you think if I do this instead of that? Is it too much?’ and she’d say, ‘Nothing is too much. Go have fun!’”

Moreno had fun – and layers of meaning — Oscar night when she was among the five past Best Supporting Actress Oscar winners who presented this year’s nominees.

It was called “a brilliant idea” to have this woman famous for singing “America” in “West Side Story” present to another celebrated Latin artist, “Barbie” nominee America Ferrera.

“It made me so happy. It really did. I credit the Oscars for that because they thought of having these five people who had won previously in that category.

“I was touched by it actually, what I experienced when I rehearsed it the day before. It was respectful and elegant.”
