The New England Revolution on Tuesday placed head coach and sporting director Bruce Arena on indefinite administrative leave.
The action was in response to an ongoing investigation conducted by Major League Soccer regarding allegations of “insensitive and inappropriate remarks.”
In a prepared statement, the Revolution stated that “the organization takes any allegations of workplace misconduct extremely seriously and is working closely with the League and fully cooperate with its investigation.”
Revolution chief assistant coach Richie Williams will serve as the interim field manager for Thursday night’s clash against Liga MX entrant Atlas FC in the Leagues Cup round of 32 tournament match at Gillette Stadium. Revolution technical director Curt Onalfo will take over soccer operations on an interim basis.
The Revolution were enjoying a productive run in the MLS Eastern Conference before shutting down for Leagues Cup. The Revolution were securely in second place with a record of 12-4-7. The Revolution resume MLS play at Nashville SC on Aug. 20.
Arena, 71, took control of the floundering Revolution (2-8-2) on May 14, 2019, and revitalized the franchise. He led the Revolution to the Eastern Conference final in 2020 and captured the Supporter’s Shield the following season with an MLS record 73 points in 33 matches.
Arena is the winningest coach in MLS history with 262 regular season wins and 35 playoff victories in 19 seasons. He is 59-31-41 as the head coach of the Revolution. Arena has captured three MLS titles and was named Coach of the Year four times.
