A teacher at Revere High School was slashed with a knife while trying to break up a fight between students on Wednesday morning, according to the tRevere Teachers Association.
A fight broke out in the school halls, the union said, and multiple educators jumped in to break up the altercation. One teacher was cut on the arm by a knife during the clash.
A photo provided by the RTA shows a slice across the educator’s forearm actively bleeding.
Revere teachers are scheduled to hold a press conference at 3 p.m. outside the school to address the incident and ongoing safety concerns, the union said.
“The ongoing health and safety crisis in Revere Public Schools is a top concern for educators, students and families,” the RTA said in their release Wednesday. “Revere educators spoke on Monday at the City Council meeting, urging elected leaders to be partners in solving the health and safety crisis.”
On Aug. 29, days into the start of school, Revere High had another major safety incident, the union stated. During a “massive brawl” in the school that day, an administrator was hit in the face, knocked out and hospitalized.
That same day after school, the union said, an altercation involving students broke out near the school on Beach Street. In social media clips of the incident shared with students, school officials said they could make out “what appears to be a firearm.”
Following the Revere City Council hearing Monday night, the RTA applauded the councilors for “taking leadership on this” after they said the School Committee “abdicated their responsibilities to protect our students.” The union is currently negotiating a new contract with the School Committee.
“Revere students and educators deserve better,” RTA co-presidents Jane Chapin and Michelle Ervin said Tuesday. “Our community demands it, and it’s time for real leadership to step up.”
