NextImg:Report: Red Sox sign LHP Matt Moore to minor league deal

The Red Sox are reportedly bringing in another left-hander to compete for a spot in the bullpen.

According to WEEI’s Rob Bradford and others, the Red Sox have signed left-hander Matt Moore to a minor league deal. Moore will receive an invite to spring training and should be a contender to earn a big league roster spot.

Now entering his 14th MLB season, the 35-year-old Moore is coming off a rough 2024 with the Los Angeles Angels in which he posted a 5.03 ERA over 48.1 innings and saw his strikeout rate significantly decline. But prior to that Moore was arguably among the best lefties in baseball between 2022-23.

In 2022 Moore posted a 1.95 ERA with 83 strikeouts over 74 innings with the Texas Rangers, and in 2023 he posted a 2.56 ERA and 60 strikeouts over 52.2 innings while pitching for the Angels, Guardians and Marlins. He averaged more than 10 strikeouts per nine innings in both of those seasons, but saw that drop to 7.6 last year while his walk rate nearly doubled (6.9% to 12.4%).

Moore is the second veteran reliever the Red Sox have brought in on a minor league deal this week, joining right-hander Adam Ottavino. The signing also came shortly after Alex Cora hinted the club was looking to add another lefty, telling reporters that the club was working hard behind the scenes and that a move could be imminent.

Moore also gives the Red Sox insurance for fellow lefty Zach Penrod, who underwent an MRI on his pitching elbow this week and could potentially miss time.
