NextImg:Report: Bruins acquiring Pat Maroon from Minnesota

While there was no official word from the Bruins or the NHL, Minneapolis-based reporter Michael Russo of The Athletic reported that big, physical winger Pat Maroon is on his way to the Bruins from the Minnesota Wild for a conditional late round pick.

After back surgery in February, Maroon is currently on injured reserve and is a couple of weeks away from playing.

Maroon, 35, comes with a resume of winning. He won three straight Stanley Cups from from 2019 – as a member of the St. Louis Blues when they beat the B’s in the final – to 2021, winning the second and third with the Tampa Bay Lightning.

At 6-foot-3, 234 pounds, Maroon is a tough, left-shot wing who has shied away from no one in his career, and that includes several bouts against Zdeno Chara.

Kevin Shattenkirk won a Cup with Maroon in Tampa.

“He’s great,” said Shattenkirk. “He’s a close friend and, again, he’s accepted his role as the type of player that he is. He’s a presence on the ice but he still can play and knows how to get the puck out of the zone on the wing, which is crucial this time of year. He’s great down low in the offensive zone, holding on to pucks and wearing teams down. And obviously there’s the other factor of that he’s a big body and he doesn’t shy away from that part of the game – chirping, fighting and that’s a valuable asset at this time of year.”

Hampus Lindholm played with him in Anaheim.

“A great guy to be around, which I learned playing with him and against him. I’m super-excited to have him here and be part of the Bruins. He’s excited as well I think,” said Lindholm.

Charlie Coyle has competed against him but met him for the first time last summer when the two skated together a couple of times.

“The guy’s a winner,” said Coyle. “A couple of different teams, won Cups and those are guys that can only help you in the room – the physical presence that he brings, the veteran leadership, a guy who has won.”

In 49 games with the Wild, Maroon had 4-12-16 totals and was minus-11 with 60 penalty minutes.
