NextImg:Red Sox shed light on new City Connect uniform release timeline

We may not know what the Red Sox’s new City Connect uniform looks like, but we now have a better idea of when we’ll see it.

The Red Sox plan to unveil their new City Connect uniform in May, a club spokesperson confirmed this week. The club did not provide a specific release date but indicated that more details will be provided as the day gets closer.

The updated release timeline is the latest nugget of information made public regarding the highly anticipated new uniforms. This week Red Sox CEO Sam Kennedy provided additional clarity while speaking on MassLive’s Fenway Rundown podcast, confirming the rumors that the uniforms will be green while indicating that they’ll draw inspiration from Fenway Park’s Green Monster.

He also predicted the new uniforms will be polarizing.

“They will be controversial,” Kennedy said. “I will say though that nothing could be more controversial than bright yellow, and those were probably among the most popular things we’ve ever done, so I would say give them a chance. I always have to remind people like my dad and others that these uniforms are not for you, they’re for the players and for that next generation of fans.”

The Red Sox are among a number of teams set to introduce new City Connect uniforms this season. Over the past two weeks the Houston Astros and Washington Nationals have both unveiled their new designs, with the Nationals’ releasing their new powder blue look on Sunday just ahead of Opening Day.

Unlike most other clubs, the Red Sox are not retiring their original City Connects and will continue to wear the yellow Boston Marathon-inspired look as part of their regular rotation. To accommodate both City Connects, the Red Sox instead plan to retire the navy blue road alternate they have worn over the past decade or so.

The Red Sox were the first club to introduce a City Connect uniform when the program first started in 2021, and since debuting their yellow alternates the Red Sox have gone 35-13 while wearing them. The club no doubt hopes their new threads will receive a similarly positive reception and provide similar on-field results.
