NextImg:Red Sox RHP Tanner Houck to make spring debut on Monday

Tanner Houck will make his first start of the spring on Monday at JetBlue Park against the New York Yankees, manager Alex Cora told reporters in Fort Myers prior to Friday’s game.

Houck, who earned his first career All-Star nod last summer, will follow Quinn Priester on Saturday and Garrett Crochet on Sunday as the Red Sox pitching staff begins its ramp up towards Opening Day. Houck is coming off a season in which he posted a 3.12 ERA over a career-high 30 starts and 178.2 innings, and the club hopes he and Crochet can form one of the top one-two punches in the American League.

In addition to Houck, the Red Sox also announced their projected pitchers for Saturday’s Grapefruit League opener in Port Charlotte against the Rays. Following Priester, the club expects Michael Fulmer, Luis Guerrero, Robert Stock and Yovanny Cruz to take the mound.

Cora said Ceddanne Rafaela, David Hamilton, Vaughn Grissom, Carlos Narvaez and Marcelo Mayer will be among the position players set to make the trip up I-75 as well.

“A lot of guys competing for spots,” Cora said.

Garrett Whitlock (elbow surgery rehab) threw a 25-pitch side session on Friday as part of his scheduled ramp up, and Kutter Crawford (knee soreness) played long toss as part of his normal progression … Cora had no update on left-hander Zach Penrod, who recently underwent an MRI on his pitching elbow. The club expects to know more by Saturday. … Left-hander Matt Moore’s signing is not yet official, but Cora expects him to be in camp at some point soon.
