Rafael Devers won’t make his Grapefruit League debut on Wednesday after all.
Though the Red Sox slugger arrived in camp several weeks earlier than the official report date, he’s behind the rest of the position players after spending the offseason resting his shoulders, which plagued him throughout the ’24 season.
“Raffy is not starting tomorrow,” Alex Cora told reporters, including MLB.com’s Ian Browne. “He asked me for more live BPs, so we’ll be good with that. We’ll see where we are over the weekend, but timing-wise he’s off. I’m not worried about him.”
Several other players are on the sidelines this week, too, albeit for a very different reason. A stomach bug is blazing a trail through the clubhouse. Roman Anthony was scratched from Monday’s game and was still out Tuesday, joined by fellow top prospect and roommate Marcelo Mayer. Triston Casas was a late scratch from Tuesday’s starting nine due to illness, and more unnamed players are sick as well.
