When spring training begins in a couple of weeks, the Red Sox will open camp with two of the top five prospects in baseball.
Kristian Campbell, the breakout player in all of minor league baseball last season, has made another huge leap in the latest Baseball America Top 100 Prospects rankings, rising to No. 4 after finishing the season at No. 24 last fall.
Roman Anthony, who finished last season ranked No. 1, was bumped to No. 2 thanks to the recent arrival of top Japanese pitcher Roki Sasaki. Marcelo Mayer is also ranked No. 15, giving Boston three prospects inside the top 15. No other organization has more than one.
Teenage shortstop Franklin Arias, one of Boston’s top recent international free agent signings, is ranked No. 76.
Originally a fourth-round pick in the 2023 MLB Draft out of Georgia Tech, Campbell entered last season with little buzz but immediately broke out as one of the top hitters in the minors. Campbell rose from High-A Greenville to Triple-A Worcester and batted .330 with 20 home runs, 24 stolen bases and a .997 OPS across all levels, sweeping almost every significant minor league award in the process.
Campbell, who was selected using the compensatory pick acquired after losing Xander Bogaerts in free agency, is now expected to contend for a spot on the Opening Day roster.
