The Red Sox are promoting former first-round pick Nick Yorke to Triple-A, a club source confirmed Wednesday.

Yorke, a 22-year-old infielder, was Boston’s top selection in the 2020 MLB Draft, when he was taken No. 17 overall out of Archbishop Mitty High in California. He has since established himself as a key part of an emerging crop of talented young infielders and now finds himself one step away from the majors.

Yorke, who is currently Boston’s No. 6 ranked prospect according to MLB Pipeline, has spent the last season and a half in Double-A, where he’s batted .263 with a .758 OPS in 155 games. Yorke’s surface-level numbers this season haven’t been anything special — he’s batting .251 with four home runs and a .691 OPS through 45 games — but he’s also cut down on his strikeout totals, lowering his strikeout rate from 24.1% last year to 18.2% this year.

He’s also shown improved versatility. After previously playing exclusively at second base, Yorke has begun playing a bit in the outfield as well. So far this season he has appeared in 12 games at left field and has yet to make an error in 98.1 innings.

That versatility could prove essential given the club’s recent acquisition of Vaughn Grissom, another talented young second baseman who is only a year older than Yorke.

Yorke is expected to make his Triple-A debut on Wednesday against Rochester. He is currently slated to start at second base and bat sixth for the WooSox.
