FORT MYERS, Fla. — Red Sox pitcher Lucas Giolito told reporters Thursday morning he’s been diagnosed with a low-grade hamstring strain.
Giolito underwent an MRI on Wednesday afternoon after leaving Tuesday’s game with left hamstring tightness. The results came back “as expected,” he said, and while he’s not sure what the next steps will be, he won’t have to shut down and can continue throwing.
The right-hander will be considered day-to-day, and it’s unclear whether or not he’ll be able to make his next scheduled start, which would be on Sunday.
Giolito suffered the injury on the first pitch of Tuesday’s game, which was his first time back on a mound in game action since undergoing internal brace surgery on his right elbow last spring. Giolito went on to finish the first inning, allowing two runs while throwing 24 pitches, but he did not come back out for the second as planned.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora had previously announced that Giolito is lined up to pitch the club’s fifth game of the season, the series opener in Baltimore on March 31. Whether this setback will impact those plans remains to be seen, but Giolito said in the clubhouse Thursday that he feels good and will follow whatever plan the team lays out for him.
