FORT MYERS, Fla. – It’s official: Alex Bregman is shipping up to Boston.
(Fort Myers for spring training first.)
The Red Sox officially announced Bregman’s three-year, $120 million contract (with two opt-outs) on Saturday morning.
In doing so, the Red Sox have brought in one of the most proven infielders in the game. Over nine seasons with the Houston Astros, he hit .272/.366/.483 and averaged 5.8 WAR, 165 hits, 39 doubles, 28 home runs, and 97 RBI per 162 games.
Bregman is a two-time All-Star, ’19 Silver Slugger, and the ’24 AL Gold Glove at third base. He won two World Series championships with the Houston Astros, and his eight consecutive years of of playing in the postseason is tied for the longest active streak in the Majors.
In 21 career games at Fenway Park, he’s hit .375 with a 1.240 OPS, going 30-for-80 with nine doubles, seven homers, 16 walks, and 17 strikeouts. His OPS is the highest of any player in MLB history with at least 75 plate appearances at Fenway, and his .490 on-base percentage in Boston is only outdone by Ted Williams.
Bregman will be the 44th player in franchise history to wear No. 2. The number has a rich history for the club, most notably worn by the late Jerry Remy (1978-84), Jacoby Ellsbury (2010-13), and Xander Bogaerts (2014-22).
To make room on the 40-man roster, the Red Sox placed left-hander Patrick Sandoval on the 60-day injured list.
