Red Sox outfielder Tyler O’Neill was removed from Monday’s game following a scary collision with Rafael Devers that left both players shaken up.
The collision occurred after Cleveland Guardians outfielder Estevan Florial sent a pop fly into shallow left field. Devers backed up to make the catch while O’Neill charged forward, and the two collided, with the back of Devers’ head crashing into O’Neill’s forehead.
Devers held on to make the catch, which ended the inning, but both men were slow to get up and were immediately attended to by the trainers.
O’Neill appeared to get the worst of it, suffering a bad cut on his forehead, and after he and Devers walked off the field he immediately went back into the clubhouse to receive treatment. After the Red Sox went down 1-2-3 in the top of the eighth Devers returned to his position at third base but O’Neill was removed, with David Hamilton subbing in at shortstop, Ceddanne Rafaela moving to center field and Jarren Duran bumping over to left field.
Considering his historically hot start with the club, O’Neill is one player the Red Sox can’t afford to be without. The outfielder became the first player in franchise history to hit seven home runs in his first 14 games with the Red Sox, and entering Monday he ranked near the top of the American League leaderboard in homers (1st, 7), OPS (1st, 1.209), runs (tied 3rd, 14), walks (tied 4th, 10) and total bases (tied 5th, 35).
