After an eventful offseason, a long spring training and a 3-4 road trip to open the season, the Red Sox are finally coming home.
Walker Buehler will take the mound as the Red Sox face the St. Louis Cardinals in Friday’s home opener. Buehler (0-1, 8.31) will face Cardinals right-hander Erick Fedde (1-0, 1.50) in his first time pitching at Fenway Park in a Red Sox uniform.
Friday will also mark the home debuts for Alex Bregman, another of Boston’s top offseason additions, and rookies Kristian Campbell and Carlos Narvaez.
Boston’s lineup will largely hew close to what Alex Cora trotted out on Opening Day in Texas, with Jarren Duran in the leadoff spot, Rafael Devers batting second as the DH, Bregman batting third, Triston Casas fourth and Trevor Story fifth. The hot-hitting Wilyer Abreu will get the start in right batting sixth, Campbell will bat seventh and Narvaez will get the start at catcher batting eighth. Ceddanne Rafaela is due to round out the lineup batting ninth.
Prior to first pitch the Red Sox will also honor the 1975 American League championship team, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this season. Those festivities will also include a tribute to the late Luis Tiant, a key member of that team who passed away this past offseason.
