The Red Sox lineup is set to get a major boost on Tuesday as outfielder Tyler O’Neill has been activated from the 7-day injured list.
But another of the club’s big bats will be out of action once again.
Rafael Devers is set to miss his fifth straight game due to knee discomfort, and his 11th game of the season due to injury overall. Pablo Reyes will start at third base in his place, and O’Neill will return as a designated hitter, with Ceddanne Rafaela set to play shortstop and Wilyer Abreu, Jarren Duran and Rob Refsnyder starting from left to right in the outfield.
Masataka Yoshida is also sitting for the second straight game.
O’Neill hasn’t played since last Monday after getting involved in a scary collision in shallow left field with Devers. O’Neill suffered a deep gash above his left eye that required eight stitches to close and was subsequently placed on the 7-day IL after experiencing concussion symptoms. Prior to the injury O’Neill had been one of the hottest hitters in baseball, batting .313 with seven home runs and a 1.209 OPS.
To make room on the active roster for the returning O’Neill, the Red Sox placed catcher Tyler Heineman on the 10-day IL with a right hamstring strain. That move was retroactive to April 22.
Tanner Houck (3-1, 1.35 ERA) is set to take the mound for the Red Sox against Cleveland’s Ben Lively (0-1, 3.60). In his last outing Houck enjoyed one of the best starts of his career, dominating the Guardians on his way to a complete game shutout.
