After sitting Sunday’s finale against the Yankees, Masataka Yoshida is back in the lineup as the designated hitter for Boston’s series opener against the Seattle Mariners on Monday.
He and the Red Sox will face one of the best pitchers in baseball.
The Mariners will send right-hander Logan Gilbert to the mound. The 27-year-old currently ranks among the best starters in the American League with a 2.72 ERA and 132 strikeouts. His 0.863 walks and hits per innings pitched is best in the AL and his 139 innings pitched is second only to Kansas City’s Seth Lugo.
Boston will answer with Nick Pivetta, who has endured an up-and-down stretch lately and is coming off his worst start of the season in Colorado last Wednesday. He allowed seven earned runs over 2.2 innings in what wound up being a 20-7 blowout loss, but before that he threw six shutout innings with eight strikeouts in his prior start against the Dodgers.
