The Red Sox called up right-hander Hunter Dobbins to make a spot start in Friday’s series opener against the Chicago White Sox.
To make room on the roster the club designated right-hander Michael Fulmer for assignment. The Red Sox also activated third baseman Alex Bregman from the paternity leave list and optioned infielder Nick Sogard to Triple-A.
Dobbins made his MLB debut on April 6 in the second game of the club’s doubleheader against the St. Louis Cardinals, and the 25-year-old earned the win after allowing two runs over five innings in the team’s eventual 18-7 win. Dobbins’ latest start will come against a Chicago White Sox team that currently ranks last in the AL Central with a 4-14 record.
Former Red Sox left-hander Martin Perez (1-0, 1.59) will get the start for Chicago. Right-handed hitters Romy Gonzalez and Rob Refsnyder are both in the starting lineup to face him, getting the nod in favor of left-handed batting Triston Casas and Wilyer Abreu.
