The Red Sox and visiting Atlanta Braves (originally of Boston) will play three for Major League Baseball’s inaugural “Rivalry Weekend,” and Friday night’s series opener will be a southpaw showdown.
Garrett Crochet will start for the home team while the Boston bats have to contend with old friend Chris Sale, who returns to Fenway as the reigning National League Cy Young.
According to Elias Sports Bureau, the Red Sox are the first team to ever face both reigning Cy Young pitchers in back-to-back games. Detroit’s lefty ace, Tarik Skubal, started Wednesday’s finale, in which the Tigers ultimately completed a series sweep of the Red Sox.

The Red Sox called up reliever Nick Burdi from Triple-A on Friday and optioned Cooper Criswell. They also moved right-hander Kutter Crawford (knee) to the 60-day injured list. Crawford continues to rehab, but the move opens a 40-man roster spot.
