Lucas Giolito will make his first appearance of the spring Tuesday when the Red Sox host the Philadelphia Phillies at JetBlue Park.
The 30-year-old right-hander hasn’t taken the mound since spring training last year after undergoing season-ending internal brace surgery on his pitching elbow. Prior to the injury Giolito had been among the most durable starting pitchers in baseball, making 29 or more starts in each of the previous five 162-game seasons.
Giolito recently completed his rehab but has been ramping up slowly through the first half of camp. Now the hope is he can rediscover his old form and help provide depth at the bottom of the Red Sox rotation.
In addition to Giolito, Triston Casas is back in the lineup at first base after missing much of the previous week battling an illness. Rafael Devers, who has been on a slow progression after spending the offseason recovering from the shoulder injuries that plagued him throughout 2024, is still not in the lineup. Masataka Yoshida will be the designated hitter, Alex Bregman will play third base and Kristian Campbell will get the start at second base.
