After a winning road trip (4-3) against the Baltimore Orioles and Houston Astros, the Red Sox are back home for the last Fenway Friday of August.
They open up a weekend series with the defending National League champion Arizona Diamondbacks. It’s a homecoming for their manager, Torey Lovullo, and general manager Mike Hazen. Lovullo was Boston’s bench coach from 2013-16, and stepped in as interim manager when then-skipper John Farrell underwent treatment for lymphoma late in the 2015 season.
Hazen, a Massachusetts native, began his Red Sox tenure as director of player development in February 2006. In September 2015, then-president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski promoted him to general manager. A year later, Hazen left the Red Sox to assume his current role atop the Diamondbacks baseball ops department.
The Diamondbacks are 72-56 entering Friday, four games back from the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West. They hold the top NL Wild Card.
At 67-59, the Red Sox are third in the American League East, seven games out of first, and three-and-a-half games out of the third AL Wild Card.
