NextImg:Red Sox announce OF Tyler O’Neill, RHP Zack Kelly battling injuries

The injury bug has bitten the Red Sox hard through the first three weeks of camp, and now the club is down two more big league players.

Red Sox manager Alex Cora told reporters Thursday that outfielder Tyler O’Neill is battling left calf tightness and won’t accompany the team on its trip to the Dominican Republic this weekend. In addition, right-hander Zack Kelly has been shut down with a sore oblique.

O’Neill’s injury isn’t believed to be serious and he’s expected to play on Monday when the Red Sox return to Florida, but Kelly may be a candidate to start the season on the injured list, Cora said.

The Red Sox did provide some good news Thursday morning as outfielder Jarren Duran is back in the lineup playing center field. Duran was removed from Tuesday’s game due to ankle discomfort, but Cora said after the game he was fine and would be back against the Braves.

In addition to the injury updates the Red Sox also announced three additional roster cuts, with infielder Chase Meidroth, outfielder Corey Rosier and infielder/outfielder Joe Dunand reassigned to minor league camp. That brings the Red Sox down to 56 players remaining in big league camp.
