NextImg:Red Sox announce LHP Chris Murphy has undergone successful elbow surgery

Red Sox left-hander Chris Murphy underwent successful Tommy John surgery, the club announced Wednesday afternoon.

Murphy underwent a reconstruction of his ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow, which was performed by Dr. Keith Meister at the Texas Metroplex Institute for Sports Medicine and Orthopedic Surgery in Arlington, Texas. The 25-year-old will miss the entire season but should be able to resume his career in 2025.

A former sixth-round pick by the Red Sox in 2019, Murphy made his big league debut last season and for a while emerged as a reliable multi-inning weapon out of the bullpen. Between his debut on June 7 through the end of July Murphy posted a 1.59 ERA over 28.1 innings in his first nine appearances. He struggled down the stretch but still finished his rookie season with a 4.91 ERA over 47.2 innings.

This year Murphy was expected to contend for a spot in the big league bullpen and likely would have been one of the organization’s top left-handed options, but he was shut down during spring training after being diagnosed with UCL damage in his left elbow. The club ultimately opted for surgery, and now Murphy will spend the 2024 season focusing on his recovery.
