The Red Sox bolstered their depth at catcher on Wednesday, acquiring Blake Sabol from the San Francisco Giants in exchange for international bonus pool space.
To clear room for Sabol on the 40-man roster, the Red Sox designated right-hander Chase Shugart for assignment.
Sabol, 27, has two seasons of MLB experience and has played 121 career games with the Giants between 2023-24. Last season he appeared in 11 games in the majors, and he also played 100 games in the minors, batting .245 with 12 home runs primarily in Triple-A.
A left-handed hitter, Sabol has mostly played catcher as a professional but has also seen time in the outfield and at first base. He was recently designated for assignment by the Giants to make room for future Hall of Famer Justin Verlander.
Sabol becomes the third catcher on Boston’s 40-man roster, joining incumbent Connor Wong and recently acquired prospect Carlos Narvaez. Sabol and Narvaez now figure to compete for the backup catcher job, with the odd man out likely to open the season in Worcester.
