State and local police are investigating a fatal shooting on West Church Street in Mansfield.

“Our homicide detectives in Bristol County and Crime Scene Services Section responded to a fatal shooting in Mansfield to assist local police,” Massachusetts State Police spokesman David Procopio said in a statement Saturday.

The statement said the shooting was in the area of 42 West Church St., next to Main Street in downtown and near the Mansfield MBTA station.

Mansfield Police Department said they were “currently working a scene on W. Church Street,” in a post on the department’s Facebook page at 12:41 p.m. Saturday. “The scene is secure and there is no treat to the public.”

Both police agencies directed media to the Bristol District Attorney’s office for more information. Emails and phone calls to that office were not immediately returned.

This is a developing story.
